100% Democracy in full bloom!
Bold ideas for our democracy are flowering through the Democracy Data Science Hack-a-thon, the State of the Student Vote Research Workshop, and a new program with the Center for Talented Youth!
Dear Friends,
Wow!
I am *so* inspired by all the amazing people getting involved in the 100% Democracy Celebration and the bold ideas for our democracy that they’re proposing!
The Democracy Data Science Hack-a-thon is now operating at full tilt with sixteen incredible data scientists working across three teams to meet critical community needs! Shout out to Phong Le of Goucher College, and Michael Rosenblum and Carrie Wright from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health for their visionary work leading these teams.
Representatives from eight of the 100% Democracy Celebration co-hosts are joining us for the 100% Democracy Research and Design Symposium Monday afternoon hosted at the historic Globe Collection at Press in Baltimore. I’ve already previewed one of the bold ideas that partners will present at the symposium and can’t wait to share the rest with you - they are so creative and delightful!
The State of the Student Vote Research Workshop is coming up next Wednesday 4/27! It’s such a honor to be co-hosting this event with the Scholar Strategy Network, SLSV Coalition, ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, Menlo College, UMD Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement, Democracy House, and Campus Vote Project. Over 60 participants including top political scientists, influential philanthropic partners, and dynamic student leaders doing original research projects through the Campus Vote Project Research Collective will all be joining! We can’t wait to see when we learn together about how to reach 100% Student Voter Participation. We’ve started a “State of the Student Vote” newsletter that will focus just on what we’re learning about building a 100% Democracy for students - you can subscribe here if that’s your passion!
In addition to these programs being so joyfully and productively in progress, I’m thrilled to share that the Center for Talented Youth at JHU is also joining the 100% Democracy Celebration to help elevate the bold ideas for our democracy that young people in their program are developing. We’re kicking off this effort with an event at the New York Hall of Science at 10 am on Sunday, May 1st! See more details below - I’d love to see you if you’re in NYC! You can RSVP here.
At this event, CTY students, parents, and alumni will have a chance to share a bit about the work they’re doing in their communities to build a 100% Democracy. And they’ll also have the chance to hear from leading scholars thinking about how young people can work with researchers to co-create groundbreaking new knowledge about how we build a 100% Democracy that includes every young person.
Best,
Sam
CTY and SNF Agora Institute present 100% Democracy
Celebrating the bold ideas and leadership of Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) students and alumni who are building an inclusive Democracy
Join us on Sunday, May 1, at the New York Hall of Science for a unique discussion and networking event that explores the challenges and future of democracy.
We are thrilled to expand our programming and support CTY students, alumni, and friends through a new collaboration with Johns Hopkins University’s SNF Agora Institute. SNF Agora is an academic and public forum dedicated to improving and expanding civic engagement and informed, inclusive dialogue as the cornerstone of global democracy.
Since 1979, CTY has served over 1 million pre-college students through programs where they tackle advanced coursework, discuss big ideas, form lasting friendships, and find their purpose. CTY brings together the brightest minds of the next generation and offers them unique opportunities like this - to explore the most important social, political, medical, technological, and philosophical challenges of our time.
Many CTYers and friends of CTY are passionate leaders dedicated to building inclusive spaces for dialogue about social issues. By connecting them with some of the world’s leading scholars at SNF Agora Institute, we’ll help grow their knowledge and leadership skills, and play an active role in building a brighter future for democracy.
We invite you to join CTY for this unique discussion and networking event. Together, we’ll celebrate the bold ideas and leadership of our inspiring CTY students and alumni and their efforts to build an inclusive democracy in their own communities.
